Cruisin Main Street 2006

The team from Let's Go Cruisin' with the support of the Mornington Chamber of Commerce, hosted the inaugural Cruisin' Main St over the Labour Day weekend in bayside Mornington, about one hour south east of Melbourne.

The Kick Off party was held on a balmy warm Saturday night at the twin restaurant complex of The Church/Beaches in Mornington. While the good food was being tucked into, (streetrodders dining on crayfish, whatever happened to hamburgers?) and the beverage flowed, the band played at Beaches while next door at The Church, old hot rod movies were showing. The courtyard between the two buildings was full of people catching up, with many tall stories being spun.. "The older I get the faster I was" type stories, Cruisin' Main Street was off to a great start.

Sunday morning and the weather forecast is for hot and strong north winds and a total fireban to boot. So how many chrome bumper car owners and families were going to turn up? The answer - heaps.

They started arriving early, the smart ones looking for the shady locations in the Park. By the official gates open time of 9:00am, we'd already checked in over 30 cars and they kept rolling in. By 11:00am the Park was pretty well filled and the access road we'd had closed for the event now became a parking lot as well.

The great local band "TwoPhase" fired up, we started the give away draws, the two shuttle buses were busy ferrying entrants back and forth to the big Craft Market at the Racecourse. The BBQ was doing a roaring trade, but the drinks stall was really smoking. The kids colouring contest was in full swing, the give away prizes were being claimed, and more cars kept arriving. And lots of different makes eras and models. Everything from great Aussie muscle cars like GT Falcons to 100 point stock cars like John Watson's superb '34 Ford roadster. Cobra's, street rods, classic Chevs, Corvettes (early & modern), Mustangs like Stewart Webster's gennie Shelby GT350 fresh of the boat with it's Californian tags with 6 months to run, were keeping the enthusiasts and the public entertained.

At 2:00pm we announced the latest AC Delco "Real Car Guy" but with twist, because our winner is a Gal! Lyn Duggin, (hope that's correct spelling Lyn) or Hot Rod Lynny as she's known to many, drives an, always immaculate Burgundy '28 Ford A Model roadster. She attends many car events around the country, and recently hitched up a matching trailer to haul her "girl stuff", as she describes it, around. She's one of those friendly folks that makes being in our hobby so enjoyable. A very worthy, and popular winner. Even more popular given she won a great remote control car from AC Delco as part of her prize, that all the guys in the crowd wanted. She picked up a beautiful Italian hand bag provided by Andrea & Sharon of "Sharands" in Main St Mornington, that had all the ladies envious. And of course she becomes a Cruiser for a year, cost free, now able to get most of her car care needs at great discount prices from Preston Motors (Parts Sales)P/L. If you look at the photos you'll see that she seems fairly happy with her win!

We then made someone from the Mornington Football Club's BBQ team pretty happy when they picked up $250 from the 50/50 draw. The band started up again, and the show continued in warm but not uncomfortable temperatures. Best of all, the forecast strong hot winds did not eventuate and a great day of "fun with family, friends and our favourite cars" continued well into the afternoon. For the really committed, it was back to Beaches for the Kick On party, with live music and more catching up to be done in the courtyard.
