 12th Mid Winter Cruise 2017
Every year we schedule a Mid Winter Cruise and wonder why? With Melbourne’s famous weather it’s hard
enough lucking out a nice day in the summer months for a planned chrome bumper
car event let alone the middle of winter.
This year’s event again proved you don’t need perfect weather to have a fun day out in your favourite
car. With a weather forecast threatening a classic wintry day with blizzards in
the alps and possibility of hail, 45 hardy car owners, their friends & family
members braved the conditions and turned a dull winters day into an enjoyable
day out.
After registering at the Sober Mule followed by a driver’s meeting, the cruise convoy left for a
scenic cruise around the southern peninsula.
This year, we prepared an observation quiz for entrants with a difference, which we called ‘Have you
been paying attention’. On arrival at our end venue in Hastings, entrants were
given a quiz sheet with questions that tested memory about things that could be
seen on the cruise route.
Entrants got down to answering the quiz while the kitchen got busy preparing 100+ meals for lunch.
Kids were also occupied with a colouring competition. With food orders being
served, suddenly it seemed that venturing out for a car cruise in the middle of
winter might not be too bad an idea.
It was soon presentation time. First up were prizes awarded to winners, one as young as 2, in the
colouring contest. Lots of happy faces, especially when they opened their prize
envelopes. Next, we found the winner in the day’s $100 Cruiser draw.
Again, it went to a new Cruiser who tookout a subscription earlier in the day. It’s amazing how often this happens.
Time for the quiz results. We had two joint winners with perfect scores. The two combatants,
Steve & Nick then had to guesstimate the total distance travelled on the
cruise route. Steve was closest to the correct answer and picked up the retro
portable vinyl record player + goody bag. Steve claimed that for all the years
he’s attended car events it’s his first win. We then proceeded to find more winners
of goody bags filled with Acdelco & Meguiar’s car care products.
As the day wound down and entrants headed for their cars, the question about why host an event in the
winter was answered. Lots of happy people that turned, what could have been a
pretty dreary day staying home, into a fun & enjoyable outing.
