Historics at Phillip Island 2008
Perfect weather saw street rods & chrome bumper cruisers leave Tooradin for the Cruise down to the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. Thanks to the VHRR, Shannons & the Mini Club for making our entry into the rapidly filling car park so smooth as we cruised past club sites in Shannons Walk to our reserved park right on the start/finish line.
After foraging for a coffee & Bacon/Egg roll, the on track action was already well underway. The large crowd for a Saturday indicates that this multi day event can only grow bigger. With over 500 fabulous race cars from the 30’s right thru the 80’s, all having their legs well stretched, there was plenty to see & hear on the track and even more when venturing into the pit garages.
And of course, the spectators paddock was filled with all sorts of collectible cars.
Later in the afternoon, a convoy of performance cars from the 20’s & 30’s left the circuit for a re-enactment of the 1st Australian Grand Prix that was held on a public road course on Phillip Island. Then it was back to Cowes for a display in the closed main street.
I guess the only downside of this event is that we now have to wait 12 months for it to come around again.
Here are a few photos from our internationally acclaimed photographer, Graeme Hutson.
