Peter Koning in USA

Peter is a long time hot rodder and supporter of Let's Go Cruisin. He's left his business, Hoppers Stoppers in the capable hands of his staff to travel the US for 12 months. Sure makes some interesting reading!

NSRA Street Rod Nationals North

So now I'm writing this next bit from a McDonalds in Joliet, which is lot like Geelong actually, nice sunny day and nice clean town, nothing like Blues Bros showed it, waiting to have the local RV mob to fit and fill the new LPG tank.
Then off to the next RV park, which is actually part of a Casino. Then in a  couple of days I will fly to LA and hopefully get the 36 out of its container in one piece, big 4 day drive LA to Illonois coming up.

Next event is 17-19 Sept here at the Chicagoland Speedway, much like Kansas with different cars I expect.

The container with the Chevy arrived on Friday as promised and will be unloaded and trucked to a depot in Long Beach once Customs pass it, from where it will be opened up as soon as US Customs approve the importation which might be another day or two. It's currently Sunday PM here and I am still in Joliet Illonois but am taking the train to Chicago O'Hare then a plane to LA tomorrow morning.
Let you know how I go then, might have play tourist in LA for a day or two.

Rented a car this weekend and went to the NSRA show in Kalamzoo, about 150 miles away.  Around 2500 cars there mostly street rods and 99% regular driven cars, can't recall many trophy hunter types, very much like an Aussie show. This time only about 20% muscle cars, the rest street rods which is how I prefer it, most drove the freeways home too.  Not many trailers. It poured rain yesterday and still hundreds driving about , seems they are a different lot for the Goodguys crowd.

Coming back just now big traffic jamb on the freeway 20 miles out of Joliet, we crawled 3 miles in 2 hours, then sat still 1/2 hour, then realised that I hadn't seen a car come down the other way for an hour.  Then word got back that there was a big fatal a couple of miles up the road and we would be there for at least 3 hours, so everyone turned around and used all these back roads to get out. Lucky my satnav found another way back.

I hope to get the Chevy driven over here by next weekend for the Goodguys event in Joliet, am staying in Joliet at an RV park attached to a Casino called the Empress. They are not allowed to build Casinos on the land but they used to be allowed to work as Riverboats like in the movies. They had to leave the dock every two hours, then tie up , which proved to be bullshit so they then allowed ther Casino to be permanently moared to the bank floating on the river, and then they have this big front which has all the shops and restaurants on the land. Which turned out just as well for the Empress casino because a year ago they had this huge fire which destroyed the entire Casino except the gambling area because it is separated by the walkway to the river. Pretty big disaster as it shut the joint down for 8 months. So whilst the gambling section is open the rest is still being rebuilt.
As you know I'm not a Gambler but I had a go at a 2 cent machine putting in a single dollar and two cents per spin, by three hours later I had it up to 20 dollars which paid for dinner. Next day the same machine kept me busy for two hours before the dollar was gone, but they have free coke machines so i reckon I came out even that day. Total two dollars I can afford.
